DIY cake smash shoot
As the title suggests, i am currently planning my youngest's 1st birthday and i thought i would share with you what exactly i'm planning theme wise, colour scheme, the day itself.
This is not really related in any way to OCD or mental health however i wanted to share how mighty stressful it can be just trying to get everything to fit together and planning what bits and bobs should go where. Of course i want it to be perfect!
The colour scheme has taken me the longest to decide and i have finally settled on silver/grey, white and navy blue. Yay for me making a firm decision because this is the only thing that i have actually made a firm decision on so far! (Pinterest has been a savior during all of this decision making)
Baby D's birthday is October 18th which falls smack bang in the middle of the week where we are all working/schooling etc so we have decided to have a small tea party on the Saturday before and to attempt a DIY at home cake smash shoot. I thought it sounded like the greatest idea ever when it first popped into my head, i now think otherwise..
I originally looked into booking a cake smash shoot with a professional photographer until i realized that you only get one or several photo prints from the shoot unless you pay a lot of money for the entire set of photos taken and even then they are on a disc and not printed, not to mention there is usually a limit to the amount they will take.
Anyway, i thought it would be a great idea to hold our very own cake smash shoot in the comfort of our own home, OK we wont have professional lighting etc but we could make it work and it would mean we can take as many photos as we like, keep and print them all with no restrictions what so ever!
I wouldn't say i'm regretting this decision now, with only 1 week to go until the day of said DIY photo shoot and not having bought a single prop yet! However it has been a task and a half deciding on props, outfit, cake design, colour scheme and just the overall theme. As i said i want it to be perfect and in my mind i have a clear idea of how i want the set up to look and what the photos will look like.
I didn't quite realize how many different patterns/ backdrops/ colour shades/ props/ outfits there are out there to choose from!
Simply choosing a paper cup i have the choice of plain silver, grey, chevron, spotted, striped or sparkly pattern there is just too much choice and this isn't feeling like the easiest thing to plan all of a sudden.
So we are going to keep it simple from now on!
Below is my list of props for my DIY cake smash shoot.
- 2 white cotton sheets (for the backdrop)
- a pack of 5 helium balloons (confetti silver)
- 3 pompom balloon weights (2 in white and 1 navy blue)
- a circle garland (silver and white)
- helium balloons spelling out 'ONE' (silver)
- 1 cake (to smash, in ombre white and navy blue)
- diaper cover and bow tie (chosen outfit for our birthday boy - navy blue purchased from TheHiddenFlamingo on Etsy)
- phone/camera/ipad (whatever device you have to take photos with)
When it comes down to the finer details like where to place all props, ive got a vision but we will see what happens on the day.
I'm still having a mare trying to decide which pattern of paper cups/plates/napkins and straws i'd like for the tea party but the good news is that i have so far chosen a 'happy birthday' banner in silver, a silver table cover and a birthday cake designed to fit in with the main table theme for the birthday boy and his guests to enjoy.
I appreciate this post may not be very helpful if your wanting some type of inspo to attempt your own cake smash shoot because i have no idea myself how this whole thing will pan out on the day. However i wanted to share with you my little plan and i'll come back and upload photos when we have done the shoot showing all of the props listed above, letting you know how it all went.
Wish me luck!
